Your lips are getting all dry and rough and you need a quick and easy way to exfoliate them? Here’s how to make a great nourishing DIY lip scrub without honey and coconut oil…

Ever since I posted my favorite DIY lip scrub recipe, I’ve got so many compliments and people telling me just how much they loved it! DIY lip scrubs are such a fun, easy and cheap way to remove all the dead, dry skin cells and make your lips soft, smooth and just – adorable!

But I also got many, many questions from girls wanting to know if they can make a DIY lip scrub without honey. And a fair number of you also wanted to know is there a good recipe for DIY lip scrub without coconut oil.

So, for all of you- yes, it is absolutely possible to make a lip scrub that doesn’t contain neither coconut oil nor honey. All you need are a few cheap natural ingredients that you probably already have on hand…

The ingredients for a no-honey and no-coconut-oil lip scrub

1. Sugar

So, as an exfoliator we will be using sugar again. Sugar is one of the best natural exfoliators. It can help you slug off all the dead, dry skin cells without drying out your lips. In fact, sugar is a natural humectant, so it can help moisturize your lips as well.

You can use white or brown sugar for this scrub. The main difference is that white sugar has sharper grains, so your scrub will also be much harsher that with brown sugar. I personally love to mix ½ white sugar and ½ brown sugar.

Sugar just seems most appropriate for the lips – I, for example, don’t like to taste even traces of sea salt wile exfoliating my lips. But if you want, you can absolutely replace sugar with either coffee grounds or fine sea salt (Himalayan pink salt would give your scrub a gorgeous subtle pink color).

2. Any Skin-Friendly Oil

For whatever reason you are trying to avoid coconut oil in your DIY lip scrub, you will still need to add some oil. The main reasons why we add oils to scrubs is because oil can help the sugar grains to glide smoothly over your lips, prevent micro damage and additionally nourish your lips.

The good news is – you can use any quality moisturizing plant oil you have on hand. Almost all natural oils are incredibly nourishing, soothing and protective. They can make your lips soft, smooth and beautiful and they can even help with healing the chapped, dry lips.

Plant oils that are especially suitable for the thin, sensitive skin of your lips include jojoba, avocado, olive, sweet almond, argan, macadamia, flaxseed oil, etc. (Of course, if you are just trying to avoid honey but you are OK with your lip scrub containing coconut oil, than you can use that one as well.)

3. Optional – Aloe Vera Gel Or Essential Oils

If you are making a DIY lip scrub without honey, you can just use sugar and oil and get a great natural lip scrub. However, adding a humectant, such as aloe vera gel, can really improve the skin on your lips.

Aloe vera has healing, soothing and anti-inflammatory effects to the skin. It can increase the moisture levels in the skin of your lips, help heal chapped lips, protect them from free radicals and it can even stimulate the blood circulation to your lips.

And if you want, you can also customize your scrub by adding your favorite essential oil. My favorite combination (currently :-)) is lavender and peppermint, but you can use whatever you like. Just make sure to patch-test your scrub first, since some essential oils can be very sensitizing.

How to Make DIY Lip Scrub Without Honey and Coconut Oil

You will need:

  • 3 teaspoons of sugar (white, brown or both)
  • 1 teaspoon any skin-friendly plant oil
  • optional – 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel
  • optional – 2 – 3 drops your favorite essential oil

This scrub is so ridiculously easy to make because, when you are making a DIY lip scrub without coconut oil, you don’t even have to warm up or melt anything. Literally all you need to do is mix all the ingredients.

Start by mixing the oil of your choice with aloe vera gel and essential oil, if you are using any. Add the sugar in the end – just enough so that you get the consistency of wet sand – not too thick and not too oily.

Prepare a small container in which you will store the scrub. To prolong the shelf life of your lip scrub, make sure the container is completely clean and wipe the inside and the lid with alcohol.

When it’s dry, transfer the mixture and store it in a cool, dry place.

To use, just apply a small amount of the scrub to your lips. Gently massage it into the skin for about 5 minutes, then rinse off. Always apply a lip balm or an oil to your lips right after using the scrub, to trap the moisture into your lips and prevent drying out.

And there you have it – 5 minutes, 2 – 4 ingredients, and your DIY lip scrub without honey and coconut oil is ready to make your lips silky smooth and as sensual as they can get. If you have any questions or wanna share your experience, chat with me down in the comments…
