After years of trying out natural beauty products, this DIY coffee body scrub is still amongst my favorites…
Exfoliation for me is an absolute essential part of a body care routine. After using a body scrub, my skin feels fresh, smooth, incredibly soft and rejuvenated. And my moisturizer gets absorbed much faster.
Even though I love DIY-ing many parts of my beauty routine, I am not someone who’s ever gonna completely commit to using only natural products. But, when it comes to physical exfoliation, I have honestly never found a commercial scrub that I liked more than the ones I can make at home.
Maybe simply because it is so easy to customize DIY body scrubs and get exactly what I like…
Anyways, this DIY coffee body scrub is not the only natural scrub I am using, but it is definitely at the top of the list of my favorites. As a coffee lover, I find the scent both stimulating and calming at the same time; kind of therapeutic. Plus, this scrub is cheap, easy to make and gives great results.
I used to use DIY coffee scrubs on my face as well. But lately I started to be much more wary of what kind of damage harsh exfoliants can make in time. And even though they never caused any irritations on my face, I started to “preventively” keep coffee scrubs away from my facial skin. (Instead, I started to use this much gentler DIY face exfoliator.)
But, body skin is far more resilient and it can definitely take a nice, balanced DIY coffee body scrub. As long as you don’t rub it on like a maniac, of course.
To make an effective DIY coffee body scrub, you can start with only 2 ingredients – coffee grounds and any carrier oil. Then, you can later decide if you want to add anything else.
Coffee is a great natural exfoliator. As I already mentioned, it might be a bit too rough for your face. But, it is just perfect for removing all the dead, dry, dull skin cells of your body skin.
Coffee is full of antioxidants that protect the skin against free radicals and maintain it youthful and glowing. Coffee also has an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin and could even help with reducing hyperpigmentation.
When used in a scrub, coffee makes the skin soft, smooth, supple and firm. It also helps your moisturizer to sink deeper into your skin, making it more effective.
Most carrier oils are full of antioxidants and nourishing fatty acids. They moisturize and nourish the skin, make it soft and smooth and protect it against harsh, drying conditions.
But, the main purpose of adding an oil to a scrub is not to moisturize the skin, but to prevent possible irritations. Oils lubricate the skin and help the exfoliating grains (whether coffee or sugar, salt, oatmeal…) to glide smoothly over the skin. That way, they reduce the harshness of the scrub and prevent damage.
You can use any carrier oil you have on hand. I like to mix and match them, but I often end up using either coconut or olive oil. Just because they are amongst the cheapest oils, and I like to keep my more expensive oils for leave-on treatments.
Another thing I kind of, sort of, sometimes (hey, I’m trying, OK?) started to avoid in my facial products. But, I still love to include them in my body care treatments. What’s a bath time without some aromatherapy?
I currently prefer to use just lavender essential oil – I really love it mixed with the faint scent of coffee! I also used to mix lavender and peppermint, or to simply add some vanilla extract.
But, you can use absolutely anything you want. Whichever scent makes you feel good is the right scent to go with! You can also simply omit adding essential oils to your body scrub.
DIY Coffee Body Scrub Recipe
To make this all-natural coffee body scrub, you will need:
- 1 cup coffee grounds
- 1/3 – 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 5 – 10 drops lavender essential oil (or any other essential oil)
How to make coffee scrub:
Start by putting your coffee grounds into a large mixing bowl. You can use fresh or used coffee grounds. If you use used coffee grounds, try to dry them first as much as possible.
Warm up the coconut oil until it completely melts. Add it to the coffee grounds. Add the essential oil of your choice as well.
Mix everything well together. You should get the consistency of wet sand. Personally, I like to add a bit more oil and get a greasier, more “gooey” texture. That way, the scrub becomes even gentler and more nourishing.
Transfer the scrub to a clean airtight glass container. The cleaner the jar is and the less water gets in there, the longer the scrub can stay on the shelf without spoiling. Stored like this, this coffee body scrub should be good for use for at least 3 months.
How to use DIY coffee body scrub:
Use your scrub during your shower. However, be very careful – the oils in the scrub will make your shower floor very slippery!
Apply a thin layer of the scrub to a wet skin. Using gentle circular motions, exfoliate your skin for around 5 minutes. Pay special attention to the parts of the skin that easily get dry and thick, like heels, elbows and knees.
When you are done, rinse off the scrub and use your body wash to remove any residue.
After the shower, while your skin is still warm and slightly damp, apply your favorite body moisturizer. Applied after the coffee scrub, the moisturizer will deep-nourish your skin, prevent moisture loss and keep your skin soft, youthful and well-hydrated for longer than usual…
