And this creamy, dreamy DIY body lotion provides everything your skin needs to be soft, smooth, supple, healthy and glowing.

This buttery DIY lotion for dry skin is an amazing moisturizer. It contains a set of high-quality natural oils, proteins, vitamins and antioxidants, all nourishing enough to make your skin soft and glowing for the spring and summer.

The Ingredients for DIY Lotion Recipe:

1. Shea Butter

Shea butter is one of the most amazing skincare ingredients. It is gentle, so it can be safely used on sensitive skin, but rich and powerful enough to treat a range of skin conditions. Every time you make a DIY lotion for dry skin, you want shea butter to be in it.

Shea butter moisturizes the skin and keeps it soft, plump and supple. It improves skin blood flow, stimulates collagen production and encourages skin cell renewal process.

This butter provides the skin with essential fatty acids, vitamins, proteins and antioxidants. It heals the skin, protects it from free radicals and has anti-aging effect. No DIY lotion recipe would be complete without it.

2. Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter is much firmer than shea butter, but equally moisturizing and nourishing to the skin. It has a smooth texture and pleasant chocolate-ish scent. It is a part of many commercial and homemade lotions, hand creams and lip balms.

Cocoa butter can soothe even the driest skin and treat conditions like eczema. It has anti-aging properties. It is often used for preventing stretch marks.

Cocoa butter makes this DIY lotion recipe rich and luxury. It has moisturizing and soothing properties and makes your skin smooth like fresh-melted-chocolate.

3. Coconut Oil

You’re hardly going to find DIY lotion for dry skin that doesn’t contain coconut oil. Coconut oil is firm at room temperature, but it melts when heated or when it comes in contact with the skin. It easily seeps into the skin and provides even deeper layers with saturated fats, nutrients and antioxidants.

Coconut oil moisturizes the skin without making it feel greasy. It spreads well, has antibacterial properties, protects your skin and keeps it healthy and youthful.

4. Sweet Almond Oil

If you need a rich natural oil to get you rid of dry patches and soothe irritated skin, sweet almond oil should be your first choice. This extremely nourishing oil is a perfect addition to the DIY lotion for dry skin, especially now when you need to quickly recover your skin from harsh winter conditions and make it ready for spring and summer seasons.

You can customize this amazing DIY lotion recipe any way you like – just replace some oil you don’t like with your favorite one. And if you add your favorite essential oils, you can even further upgrade this body lotion to an aromatherapy product.

DIY Lotion for Dry Skin Recipe

  • 2/3 cup shea butter
  • 1/3 cup cocoa butter
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup sweet almond oil
  • around 15 drops your favorite essential oil

To make this DIY lotion for dry skin, melt the shea butter, cocoa butter and coconut oil in a double boiler. When everything is melted, remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool down a bit. Then add the almond oil and essential oils and stir.

When your mixture starts to thicken but is still soft and runny, whip it with a whisk or mixer. How light and fluffy your lotion is going to be depends on how well you whip it, which helps you to get the exact texture that you like.

Transfer your gorgeous-smelling DIY lotion for dry skin to a glass container and it is ready to use. Just apply it to your skin after every shower, while your skin is still slightly damp.

Why kind of shea butter and cocoa butter? I know there is like unrefined and other kinds. Thank you

    1. Dakota says:

      Hi Johnni,
Unrefined butter is always a better choice than refined because it is less processed, so it maintains all of its healing & cosmetic properties. It is also important that the butter is organic because organic products don’t contain pesticides and other chemicals you most definitely do not want on your skin.
Personally, I like this one, but it’s up to you to find something that suits you best.
      Hope this helps 🙂 …

Can I use something in place of the shea butter? I’m allergic to Shea

    1. Jovana R. says:

      Hi Kristin,
You can replace shea butter with any other natural butter. My recommendation would be mango butter – I like its fruity fragrance and how creamy it is.
You can also just use more cocoa butter – 3/4 – 1 cup in total. The more you add, the thicker lotion you get.

Your cover says castor oil but there’s no castor oil in your recipe. Do you think it can still be part of the recipe?

    1. Jovana R. says:

      Absolutely!
I used to make this lotion with castor oil. And at some point, I replaced it with sweet almond oil (same amount) simply because sweet almond oil became one of my favorite natural oils and I started putting it into everything :-).
Castor oil is a bit thicker and kind of sticky. But the end result is almost the same. So, if you prefer castor oil, feel free to use that one.

Keep up the good work, thanks!

  5. Niyah says:

Hi,can I replace the cocoa butter with something else,I don’t use cocoa butter, and also the almond oil

    1. Jovana R. says:

      Hi Niyah,
You can simply use 1 cup of shea butter instead of 2/3 cup. Or you can try with mango butter instead of cocoa.
As for the oil, any skin-friendly liquid oil will do. I’d recommend you to try jojoba or grapeseed. I also used to use castor, and that worked well too.

  7. What essential oils do you recommend for this recipe that will smell good as well as be great for dry skin? I don’t care for Lavender or Rose.

    1. Jovana R. says:

The scents are really a matter of personal preference, so you can add whatever you usually like to use. My personal favorite scents are jasmine, as well as combination of lavender and peppermint. I also like to add a touch of frankincense every now and then.
You could also just skip the essential oils altogether and get a natural-smelling lotion that smells of the carrier oils you’ve used. And all the carrier oils and butters in this recipe are great for dry skin.
