Check out down below what the best (and my personal favorite) home remedies for split ends are, how to prevent split ends in the first place and how to treat your hair to enhance its beauty and health…

Trying to grow long, bouncy, beautiful hair, but split ends keep messing with your plans? Been there, done that.

And if there’s something I’ve learned from that, it is that not cutting your ends is not a way to go! It makes you feel for a while that you are going in a right direction – your hair is getting longer and longer, and that is all you wanted, right?

But then, you look at it better one day and realize how bad, unhealthy and dull it became. And then you cut it off anyway.

Split ends really can ruin your hair’s look. But, there are ways to deal with them. Maybe not to stop them completely, but definitely to postpone the haircut. And make your hair beautiful and healthy in the process.

I’ve put together down below 5 best home remedies for split ends – my personal favorites, that are helping me a lot to keep the things under control in between cuts. But before we get to the recipes, just a reminder that your lifestyle and the way you treat your hair have a huge impact on its health and beauty.

Here are a few things you can do to prevent split ends from occurring too often:

How To Prevent Split Ends Naturally:

1. Be gentle to your hair

Most of us are not even aware of how rough we are to our strands. From brushing too vigorously or using low-quality brushes, not using hair friendly pillowcases, rubbing wet hair with a towel, to intentionally picking on split ends, making the matter even worse.

Try to be nice to your hair for a change – you won’t believe what a difference that can make.

2. Reduce the heat

The most often advice you’ll get for preventing split ends is – stop using heat styling tools. But how many of us can truly commit to that?

Instead, try to skip the styling when you can. Wait for your hair to dry naturally 70 – 80 % before finishing it with a blow dryer. And reduce the heat on your flat iron as much as possible – not every hair needs max temperatures.

3. Choose hair products wisely

If your hair is dry and brittle and split ends occur often, the last thing you want to do is use a harsh shampoo that will strip all the oils from your hair and damage it even further. Instead, opt for a gentle, natural shampoo that nourishes the hair as it cleanses it.

It is also very important to never skip a conditioner. A quality hair conditioner can restore your hair, improve its flexibility, make it soft and more manageable and, of course, prevent split ends.

4. Add some extra nourishment

Frequent split ends are usually a hair’s way to tell you something’s wrong. It needs more moisture, nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants…

Adding an additional nourishing step to your hair care regimen can make a whole lot of difference in your hair’s health and appearance. You can try a moisturizing hair mask (such as one of these DIY coconut oil hair masks), a repairing hair serum, hair moisturizer, hot oil treatment

5. What you eat matters

Like with anything else, your eating habits have a huge impact on your hair. The right food keeps the scalp and hair healthy, prevents breakage and hair loss and adds glow. Food alone cannot stop split ends, but it can help in restoring and regenerating your hair.

The food your hair especially likes includes: nuts, flaxseeds (most seeds, really), dark chocolate, strawberries, eggs, avocado, spinach, tomato…

6. Trim regularly

Even if you are trying to grow your hair. Trimming your ends – at least minimally, at least once every 3 to 5 months – is necessary if you want your hair to be not just long, but beautiful and full of life.

Just remember – long hair is attractive only when it is healthy, optimally hydrated and with no split ends.

5 Best Home Remedies for Split Ends

And now, as promised, these are my favorite super nourishing, extra moisturizing natural remedies for split ends – great for treating existing split ends and for preventing new ones from occurring:

1. Sweet Almond Oil and Honey Hair Treatment for Split Ends

Ingredients for Sweet Almond Oil and Honey Hair Treatment for Split Ends

Out of all home remedies for split ends, this is the one I use most often. I always have the ingredients on hand, it is super easy to make and use and it gives great results.

Sweet almond oil repairs and softens the hair and makes it strong, flexible and manageable. It provides the hair with many nutrients, such as omega-9 fatty acids, vitamin E and protein.

Honey is full of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and amino acids. It conditions the hair, keeps it healthy and smooth and restores moisture. It also replenishes dry, dull and damaged hair and adds shine.

  • 3 tablespoons sweet almond oil
  • 2 tablespoons raw organic honey
  • a few drops essential oil of your choice – optional

In a small bowl, mix the sweet almond oil and honey well. You should get a smooth, runny paste that you can easily pour through your hair. If you want, you can also add a few drops of any essential oil that you like.

Apply to your wet hair, right after shampooing. Just pour it from the roots all the way down, especially making sure the ends are drenched. Leave it on for 20 – 30 minutes, then wash and condition your hair as usual.

2. Herbal Hair Rinse for Split Ends with Apple Cider Vinegar

Try using this hair rinse once or twice a month, and you won’t believe what a difference it can make in your hair! It makes the hair super shiny, purifies it, strengthens it and makes it healthy and beautiful from roots to tips.

Apple cider vinegar rejuvenates the hair and seals the hair cuticles, reducing the frizz and split ends and making the hair smooth and sleek. The herbs promote the health of the hair and scalp, repair the damages and promote hair growth.

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon dried nettle
  • 2 teaspoons dried rosemary
  • 1 tablespoon dried sage
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Put all the herbs into a bowl. Cover with 1 cup of boiling water and let it steep for 10 minutes. Then strain the mixture and let it cool down. Add the apple cider vinegar and mix well.

Shampoo your hair and condition it. When you wash out the conditioner, pour the hair rinse over your scalp and let it run down through your hair. Leave it on at least for a few minutes before rinsing it out.

3. Diy Protein Hair Mask with Avocado and Macadamia Oil

Hats down the best hair mask for dry, damaged hair. It is very nourishing and moisturizing, makes the hair strong and manageable, controls the frizz and improves elasticity.

Avocado is rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, biotin, potassium, magnesium… It makes the hair silky smooth, protects it from damage and prevents breakage.

Egg is rich in protein and amino acids. It reduces the hair splitting and adds volume and shine to your hair. Macadamia nut oil is packed with moisture and nutrients and it can help you keep your hair healthy, luscious and frizz and tangle-free.

Mash an avocado well to get rid of all the lumps. You can even do this in a food processor. When you get a smooth paste, add an egg and mix well. In the end, mix in the macadamia oil as well.

Apply the mixture to your wet hair. Massage it well into your hair and scalp and leave it on for around 20 minutes. Then wash the mask out and condition your hair as usual.

4. Diy Conditioning Hair Pack with Yogurt and Olive Oil

All the ingredients for DIY Conditioning Hair Pack with Yogurt and Olive Oil

Yogurt is a great natural conditioner that protects the hair and makes it soft and manageable. It prevents hair damage and split ends by strengthening the hair shaft.

Olive oil is one of the best natural oils you can use on your hair. It contains oleic acid, palmitic acid and squalene – emollients that soften the hair. Olive oil penetrates the hair shaft and helps the hair to retain moisture. It also smooths the outer cuticle of the hair and makes damages and split ends less noticeable.

If you want, you can replace olive oil with avocado oil.

  • ½ cup yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 – 3 drops your favorite essential oil – optional

This hair pack is super easy to make. All you have to do is put both the ingredients (and, if you want, the essential oil) into a small bowl and mix them well until you get a smooth paste.

Shampoo your hair, squeeze out the water and absorb as much as you can with a towel. Apply the hair pack. Massage it into your hair and scalp and comb your hair with a wide tooth comb. After 15 – 20 minutes, rinse out the hair pack and wash and condition your hair.

5. Diy Hot Oil Hair Treatment for Split Ends

Even on its own, flaxseed oil is one of the best home remedies for split ends. It nourishes the hair, provides it with necessary nutrients and antioxidants, revitalized dry, damaged and dull hair and even prevents premature hair graying.

The rest of the oils are also natural hair boosters, each with its own benefits for your hair. Both coconut and jojoba oil are irreplaceable parts of the hair care industry and they both can help you maximally reduce split ends.

But you can play with the recipe a bit, replacing the ingredients to get your perfect combination or simply using what you have on hand at the moment. Especially hair friendly natural oils you could use for this split end treatment are olive, avocado, argan, castor, sweet almond, hazelnut, sunflower seed, pumpkin seed, grapeseed, sesame…

  • 3 tablespoons flaxseed oil
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
  • 5 – 10 drops lavender essential oil

Put the flaxseed oil, coconut oil and castor oil in a saucepan. Warm it up until the coconut oil melts and the mixture is warm, but not too hot to touch. Remove from the heat, add the lavender essential oil and mix.

Pour the mixture into a large bowl and dip your ends in it. Slowly work the oils up your hair. Unless your hair is oily, apply the treatment to the scalp as well and massage it in. Put on a shower cap and wrap your head in a warm towel. After 40 – 50 minutes, wash and condition your hair.

  1. The usage of aloe vera as a home remedy for silky and shiny hair is simple. Just apply aloe vera gel on your scalp and leave it overnight. You can wash it off the next morning for a clean scalp. Also, a lot of people mix it with some honey in equal parts and apply it on your scalp. If you do this, clean it after 30 minutes with cold water.
