Are you tired of dealing with frizzy hair as soon as it starts smelling like it’s going to rain? It can be very frustrating – you’ve just spent two hours styling your hair to perfection, and the moment you step outside, it’s all ruined.

Frizzy hair mostly occurs when the hair is damaged and dry. Dry hair will try to absorb any moisture it can get from the surrounding air, which you can especially notice in humid environment.

So, instead of staying smooth and silky, the cuticles (the outermost layer of your hair) rise, allowing the moisture from the air to penetrate into the hair shaft. Your hair swell up and you get that recognizable bush-like thing spreading from your head in all directions.

Want to smooth out your hair cuticles and make your hair silky, healthy and elastic? Proper, regular care mostly based on natural oils is the best way to go about it. Here are the 9 best DIY hair products that can help you to get rid of frizzy hair once and for all.

1. Olive Oil

Olive oil is one of the rare oils that can penetrate the hair cuticle and moisturize the cortex of the hair as well. It effectively treats dry, damaged, frizzy hair, split ends and dandruff. After only several uses, the hair is noticeably healthier and more elastic and manageable.

An overnight treatment with olive oil is one of the best things you can do for your hair. The day before washing your hair, coat your hair in olive oil from root to tip.

Wrap your hair in a plastic bag or put on a shower cap, then wrap it all in a warm towel. In the morning, shampoo your hair as you usually would. Repeat the treatment at least twice a month.

2. Avocado Hair Mask

The combination of avocado and jojoba oil is great for frizzy hair. Avocado is a real beauty fruit, a natural conditioner that nourishes the hair and makes it smooth and shiny. It contains essential fatty acids, potassium, copper, iron, zinc and vitamins A, B, C and E.

Jojoba oil moisturizes the hair and protects it from breakage and split ends. It is rich in vitamins and minerals that nourish the hair, strengthen it and prevent hair loss.

Put 1 ripe avocado and 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil in a blender. Mix until you get a completely smooth mixture. Apply the mask to clean, damp hair and leave it like that for at least 30 minutes. Then rinse it out thoroughly and, if necessary, shampoo your hair again.

3. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is often used in hair styling products because it is solid at room temperature but melts when warmed up. What this practically means is that you can apply it to your wet hair and, as you blow dry it, the oil melts.

Coconut oil penetrates the hair and provides the hair shaft with important fatty acids, while some of it stays on the surface, protects your hair and makes it look smooth and shiny. After the styling, as your hair cools down, the oil firms up, helping the hair to preserve the style.

4. Castor Oil

Castor oil is a humectant that hydrates your hair and helps it to retain the moisture. It contains minerals, proteins, vitamin E and ricinoleic, omega-6 and 9 fatty acids. It is often included in hair products to promote hair growth, but it also makes the hair stronger and smoother and helps keep the frizz under control.

You can use castor oil for frizzy hair as a hot oil treatment. Mix around ½ cup of castor oil and ¼ cup of olive oil (you may have to adjust the amounts, depending on the length and thickness of your hair). Warm it up in a double boiler. The oil mixture should be warm, not too hot. Remove it from the heat and add a teaspoon of vitamin E oil.

Apply the mixture to the unwashed hair and scalp. Massage the scalp for a couple of minutes, then put on a shower cap and wrap your head in a warm towel. Leave it like that for 30 – 60 minutes. Wash your hair thoroughly and apply your conditioner.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar removes accumulated dirt from the hair. It also closes open cuticles and smooths out your hair, helping it to retain moisture.

Mix 2 cups of water, 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and around 10 drops of lavender essential oil. Pour the mixture through the clean hair and after 5 minutes rinse it out.

6. Banana Hair Pack

Bananas are rich in potassium, calcium and natural oils. They provide deep nourishment for your hair, making it strong and elastic. This mask repairs damaged hair, hydrates it and makes it healthy and shiny. If you are dealing with frizzy hair, this is the right mask for you.

Put 1 banana in a blender and blend it well until there are no any chunks left. Add 2 tablespoons of sweet almond oil, 2 tablespoons of honey and 3 tablespoons of whole milk and mix everything well. Apply the mask to shampooed, damp hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash it out and follow with conditioner.

Aloe vera has powerful hydrating properties that can do a lot for frizzy hair. The gel softens the hair, improves its texture and makes it more manageable. This mask creates a protective layer on the surface of your hair, preventing the loss of moisture.

Mix equal amounts of aloe vera gel and olive or coconut oil. Apply the mask to the length of your hair and leave it on for around 20 minutes. Rinse it out with lukewarm water and just a little bit of shampoo. Apply a conditioner.

This treatment thoroughly cleanses the hair, adding an extra shine to it. It also supplies the hair with important vitamins and antioxidants, nourishes it and improves its general condition. Plus, honey is a humectant, so it attracts moisture to your hair and helps retain it.

Dissolve 2 spoons of honey and 2 spoons of lemon juice in a cup of water. After shampooing, pour the mixture through your hair. Let it sit for 10 minutes, occasionally massaging your scalp. Rinse it out, shampoo your hair again and follow with a conditioner.
