I was in high school when I first tried out this DIY avocado hair mask. For years and years, it was my go-to product every time I wanted to do something nice for my hair. I loved how quickly and easily I can make a hair mask that is all-natural, yet so nourishing and restoring.

I’ve been trying out lots of new hair products lately and kind of forgot about this avocado mask. But, a few months ago, when my hair started acting like a spoiled little brat (“You can’t tell me what to do!”), this mask was the first thing I thought of.

And surely, after just a few uses, my strands started to resemble to something normal again…

Benefits of Avocado Hair Mask

I’ve tried out many different versions of DIY hair masks with avocado (including just pure avocado puree). But this one definitely works best for my hair. It is very moisturizing and replenishing. It helps me delay split ends. Plus, it adds a lot of shine.

Each ingredient on its own has lots of benefits for the hair.

Avocado is rich in vitamins, amino acids and proteins. Its oils soothe the scalp, nourish the hair and improve the elasticity of the strands. It is beneficial for all hair types, but dry and damaged hair will love it the most. Plus, the avocado’s creamy texture is so easy to mix with other ingredients and to spread on hair.

Coconut oil is one of the few natural oils that can penetrate the hair’s cuticle and provide deep hydration to your strands. It repairs frizzy, broken and dry hair, protects the strands and prevents loss of moisture and protein. It is one of the best oils you can use for your hair. But, if you want, you can replace coconut oil with olive, argan or any other hair-friendly oil.

Yogurt is one of my favorite natural ingredients for DIY hair care products. It conditions the hair, softens it, hydrates and improves the hair’s strength and resilience. And lactic acid in yogurt cleanses both hair and scalp and makes the hair silky smooth and shiny.

Honey is full of antioxidants. It is a natural humectant that can help you improve the overall hair health and appearance. Honey softens the hair, restores its shine, prevents breakage and reduces frizz. It might also help stimulate hair growth.

Essential oils are optional in this recipe. You can add them to improve the scent and really customize the mask. I add them sometimes, when I feel like it. You can use any that you like, but essential oils that are especially good for hair are lavender, rosemary, chamomile, clary sage, ylang ylang, tea tree, bergamot, etc.

To make an all-natural avocado hair mask, you will need:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons thick yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey
  • 3 – 5 drops any essential oil – optional

The first time I was making this mask, I mashed everything with the backside of a fork. But, not only it took ages, the avocado never really became as smooth and creamy as I wanted it to be.

The results, once I washed it out of my hair, were still more than satisfying. So, you can definitely do it that way. But my advice – make your life easier and just use a food processor.

So – all you have to do is simply put all the ingredients into a food processor and blend until you get a smooth mixture. You should get a pale green, rich and slightly runny paste.

Apply the avocado mask to your hair before washing it. Just dampen your hair (you can use it on dry hair, too, but damp hair absorbs better). Then spread the mixture from scalp to ends. I like to massage it into my scalp, too. But, some girls complained it made their roots look greasy. So, maybe skip the scalp if your hair is on the oilier side.

Anyways, collect your hair into a bun, put on a shower cap or cover with a plastic bag, and wrap everything in a towel. Leave it on for 30 – 40 minutes, then wash and condition your hair as usual. Let your hair dry naturally at least 70 – 80% before finishing it with a blow dryer.

You can use this mask 3 – 4 times a month or simply anytime you need help to make your hair soft, flexible, manageable and shiny.
