Watermelon skincare tips – check out down below what are the benefits of watermelon for your skin and 10 fast, easy and incredibly nourishing DIY watermelon face masks you can make at home…
Summer is just around the corner. And though the sun, sand and salty water can wreak havoc on your face, this season also brings a lot of juicy, delicious fruits you can use to replenish your skin and make it healthy, youthful and glowing again.
Watermelon is at the very top of the list of my favorite summer fruits. Not only it has tones of benefits for you when you eat it, but it also makes a perfect base for many hydrating and nourishing natural face masks.
In fact, watermelon-based skincare products are trending at the moment. The trend started in Korea, then spread to the rest of the world. These days, you can find lots of watermelon facial masks, scrubs, cleansers and moisturizers on the market. And there are lots of ways to include fresh watermelon flesh into your beauty routine.
My skin certainly enjoys when a smear some of that hydrating, cooling, refreshing pulp all over it! And you can find down below 10 recipes for DIY watermelon face masks that are well-balanced, inexpensive and easy to make and use.
But first, here are 10 very important reasons why you should try and add watermelon to your skincare routine…
Benefits of Watermelon for Skin
- Watermelon contains around 40% more lycopene than raw tomato! Lycopene offers photoprotection, repairs the skin and has an anti-inflammatory effect. It can also help you even out your skin tone and add glow.
- It also contains vitamins A, C and E – all powerful antioxidants that protect the skin against free radicals, brighten the complexion and speed up the skin renewal process.
- Watermelon is a rich source of moisture. It deep-hydrates the skin without making it oily and gives you that plump, youthful, radiant look.
- Watermelon juice is a natural skin toner. It makes the skin supple and flexible and diminishes dull complexion.
- It also somewhat acts as a natural cleansing and purifying agent. After a watermelon face mask, the skin looks clear, healthy and glowing.
- Watermelon can help you prevent premature aging signs, improve the collagen production and get a firmer, more elastic skin.
- When applied topically, watermelon can help you reduce the size of your pores and control the sebum production. This makes it a great natural treatment for oily skin and acne.
- You can use it to soothe rashes and minor sunburns. It can help you soothe itching and inflammation and reduce redness.
- Natural watermelon face masks are gentle and non-irritating. They are suitable for all skin types and can help improve many skin-related issues.
- You can use frozen watermelon cubes to instantly refresh your face, reduce imperfections and boost the glow in your skin.
10 Best DIY Watermelon Face Mask Recipes
As with any new product, it would be a good idea to patch-test these masks first, just to be sure. Watermelon is not likely to cause skin irritations and sensitivities, but you never know.
In all my watermelon face mask recipes I’m using the pulp. And the best way to get the smoothest watermelon pulp is to blend a piece of watermelon. However, it would be unpractical to blend a small cube every time you want to make a face mask.
So, what I like to do (and I do this for almost all DIY face masks based on some fruit) is to blend a larger watermelon piece and divide the pulp into an ice cube tray. That way, every time I want to make a watermelon mask, I have a frozen cube of watermelon pulp on hand.
You can also borrow a tablespoon of watermelon pulp every time you make a watermelon slushie or watermelon juice.
In any case, here are the 10 best face masks you can make with this luscious, juicy fruit:
1. Diy Watermelon Face Mask for All Skin Types
Benefits:
Here’s a very simple watermelon mask that will suit everyone. This mask is nourishing, rejuvenating, brightening and restoring. You can use it as often as you want.
How to make it:
- 2 tablespoons watermelon pulp
- 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
- 1 – 2 teaspoons jojoba oil
To make this mask, all you have to do is put the watermelon pulp and aloe vera gel into a small bowl and mix well. Add the jojoba oil and mix until you get a smooth, runny mixture.
Apply a thin layer of the mask to a clean face. Leave it on for around 20 minutes and during that time reapply every time your skin soaks it up. After 20 minutes, wash the mask off and apply a face cream.
2. Face Mask with Watermelon Juice for Skin Brightening
Benefits:
I love each of these ingredients separately, and together they make one of my favorite DIY face masks. It helps brighten my skin, fight dullness and fade occasional acne mark.
How to make it:
- 1 tablespoon watermelon juice
- 2 teaspoons thick yogurt
- 1 teaspoon rice flour
Mix well the thick yogurt and watermelon pulp. When smooth, add the rice flour and mix again to get a smooth paste. If you want your mask to be thicker, you can add some more rice flour.
Wash and exfoliate your face. Apply the mask evenly and leave it on for 10 – 15 minutes. Wash it off and apply a moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp.
3. Diy Watermelon Face Mask for Oily Skin
Benefits:
Watermelon can somewhat help you control the skin oiliness, but its biggest advantage are its hydrating properties. Oily skin is often very dehydrated and dull looking. But this mask will refresh and replenish it in no time.
How to make it:
- 1 tablespoon watermelon pulp
- 2 teaspoons raw honey
- 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
To make this mask, just put all the ingredients into a small bowl. Mix everything well until your mask is smooth and runny. If you want, you can also add a teaspoon of kaolin clay, for some extra cleansing and oil-absorbing properties.
Apply the mask to a clean face, preferably after a gentle scrub. Do not let it dry on your face – every time it starts to dry, apply another layer. After 15 – 20 minutes, wash off the mask and apply a face cream right away.
4. Hydrating Diy Watermelon Face Mask
Benefits:
This mask screams summer to me. Both cucumber and watermelon are refreshing, cooling and super hydrating. The mask tones and soothes the skin, makes it plump and supple and adds a lot of natural glow.
How to make it:
- 1 tablespoon watermelon pulp
- 2 teaspoons cucumber puree
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
I prepare cucumber puree similarly to watermelon pulp – blend a whole cucumber, then freeze in an ice cube tray. I also warm up the coconut oil a bit, so that I can easily mix it with the other two.
When you have all the ingredients ready, just mix everything well. You can apply it to your face with your fingers or using a cotton ball. Just keep applying it, not letting it get dry, for around 15 minutes. Rinse off and apply your face cream.
5. Watermelon Mask for Skin Imperfections
Benefits:
This mask is packed with antioxidants. It has healing, replenishing and anti-aging properties. It can help you fade skin imperfections, even out your skin tone and make your skin plump and smooth.
How to make it:
- 1 tablespoon watermelon pulp
- 2 teaspoons aloe vera gel
- 1 teaspoon matcha green tea powder
Everyone can use this mask at least once a week. To make it, first mix the watermelon pulp and aloe vera gel. Add the matcha powder and mix everything well until you get a smooth, even face mask.
Apply the mask to a clean face in as thick a layer as you can. Leave it on for 10 – 15 minutes. Then wash the mask off and apply your face moisturizer, to lock in the moisture.
6. Watermelon Face Mask for Glowing Skin
Benefits:
Super nourishing, moisturizing and restoring. This mask hydrates the skin without making it greasy. It softens dry patches, makes the skin smooth and youthful and adds dewy glow.
How to make it:
- 1 tablespoon watermelon pulp
- 1 tablespoon mashed peach
- 2 teaspoons honey
Mash well a piece of ripe peach until you get a smooth, even puree. You can also blend it until smooth, just like with watermelon. Add the other two ingredients and mix well.
Wash your face with a mild face wash and gently exfoliate it. Apply as thick a layer of the mask as you can. Leave it on for 15 – 20 minutes, then wash off and apply a moisturizer.
7. Anti-Aging Diy Watermelon Face Mask
Benefits:
This is a perfect face mask for preventing premature aging signs and improving the skin’s firmness, elasticity and radiance. Both grapes and vitamin E have a lot to offer to aging skin. They make the skin soft, smooth, resilient and youthful.
How to make it:
- 1 tablespoon watermelon pulp
- 2 teaspoons grapes pulp
- 1 capsule vitamin E oil
Blend the grapes or mash the pulp until smooth. Add the watermelon pulp and vitamin E oil. Mix everything well together.
Apply the mask to your face with your fingers or with cotton balls. As with the other masks – reapply every time your skin absorbs it. Leave it on for 15 – 20 minutes and don’t forget to apply a moisturizing face cream afterwards.
8. Diy Watermelon Face Mask with Potato
Benefits:
Famous natural face mask that Miranda Kerr’s facialist recommends. On top of all the already mentioned benefits of watermelon for skin, potato is an amazing skin brightening and rejuvenating agent, while honey protects and repairs the skin.
How to make it:
- 2 tablespoons watermelon pulp
- 2 tablespoons mashed potato
- 1 tablespoon honey
Boil a potato and mash until soft. Mix 2 tablespoons of the mashed potato with 2 tablespoons of watermelon pulp and 1 tablespoon of honey until you get a smooth paste.
Apply the mask evenly to a clean face. Leave it on for around 20 minutes. Then wash the mask off. Apply a face cream while your skin is still warm and slightly damp.
9. Refreshing Summer Face Mask with Watermelon and Banana
Benefits:
I love this mask so much! My skin looks and feels great after it. Watermelon is great for skin that is dehydrated, dull and lifeless (which mine often is during the summer). Banana and rosehip oil are super nourishing and moisturizing, plus they prevent premature skin aging.
How to make it:
- 1 tablespoon watermelon pulp
- 1 tablespoon mashed banana
- 2 teaspoons rosehip oil
Mash a piece of banana well with the backside of a fork. Try to get rid of all the lumps. Add the watermelon pulp and rosehip oil and mix everything well.
Wash and gently exfoliate your face. Apply the mask as evenly as possible. Leave it on for at least 20 minutes, then rinse it off. Apply your face moisturizer.
10. Diy Watermelon & Avocado Face Mask
Benefits:
Another moisturizing face mask that all skin types will love. It is rich in natural oils and healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It revitalizes, repairs and soothes the skin.
How to make it:
- 1 tablespoon watermelon pulp
- 1 tablespoon mashed avocado
- 2 teaspoons any skin friendly carrier oil
Mash well a piece of avocado to get a smooth, creamy paste. Add the watermelon pulp and any skin friendly carrier oil that you usually use. Mix well until smooth.
