When the cold, harsh weather strikes and your skin starts punishing you for it by looking all dull, dry and unhealthy, this DIY cocoa face mask is a perfect choice to get it back into a good mood. In fact, there are so many benefits of cocoa powder for your skin, you could consider adding this mask to your regular weekly skincare routine.
DIY face mask with cocoa powder might be a perfect choice for skin that is dry, dull, sensitive or aging. It can help you soften rough patches, soothe irritations and make your skin smooth, glowing and youthful.
There are many ways to make DIY cocoa face mask, but my absolute favorite is with yogurt and honey. Here’s how these ingredients can help you get and maintain healthy, beautiful skin:
Benefits of cocoa powder for skin
DIY face masks with cocoa powder can be used to treat and improve any skin type. They can help enhance your skin’s tone and elasticity and prevent future damage.
Cocoa is a skin superfood. It contains many nourishing compounds, including phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals and amino acids. All these nutrients feed the skin, promote the healthy glow and protect the skin against the environmental stressors.
Cocoa is also rich in flavanols. These plant-derived antioxidants protects the skin against free radicals and delay formation of wrinkles and fine lines. More than that, they also help maintain the elasticity of the blood vessels and keep the skin looking vibrant and youthful.
All in all, cocoa helps tone and brighten the skin. It can add some plumpness and suppleness to the skin and improve its overall look and feel.
Benefits of yogurt for skin
On top of all the benefits of cocoa powder for skin, this mask also contains yogurt, which is a great natural skin brightener. Yogurt helps dissolve dead skin cells and promotes the skin’s natural renewal process.
Yogurt lightens the skin, helps fade dark marks and acne spots, hydrates the skin and makes it smooth and glowing. It can also help your skin recover from sun exposure, minimize the appearance of enlarged pores and improve the overall appearance of your complexion.
Benefits of honey for skin
There’s a good reason why honey is one of the most popular ingredients in natural skincare products. I am personally using it in several of my favorite DIY recipes, as it is easy to mix and use and its benefits are vast.
Honey is a natural humectant that moisturizes the skin without making it oily. It also has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and it enhances the skin healing process.
If your skin is very dry, you can also add 1 – 2 teaspoons of any skin friendly plant oil. The oils can even further moisturize your skin, make it soft and smooth and reinforce the skin’s protective barrier.
I sometimes add jojoba oil, but almost any seed or nut oil would do.
So, here is the best, quickest, cheapest and easiest way to get all the benefits of cocoa powder for your skin:
The Best DIY Cocoa Face Mask
- 2 tablespoons raw cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon yogurt
- 2 teaspoons honey
- 1 – 2 teaspoons jojoba oil (optional)
To make this DIY cocoa face mask, start by mixing the cocoa powder and yogurt. If the mixture is too thin, you can add a bit more cocoa.
When your mixture is smooth, add the honey and, if you want, any nourishing oil you have on hand. Mix everything well together.
Wash your face. You can also exfoliate it with some gentle face scrub (here’s my favorite). Apply the cocoa face mask while your skin is still damp. Leave it on for 15 – 20 minutes.
After that time, wash the mask off with warm water and a gentle face wash. Apply your favorite face moisturizer while your skin is still warm and slightly damp. The moisturizer will lock the moisture into your skin and keep it soft, protected and optimally hydrated for much longer…
So, that is the quickest and easiest way I know of to use the benefits of cocoa powder for my skin. What about you? Do you have some other DIY cocoa face mask you prefer? Please share it in the comments…
